Cambridge seen through the eyes of local artists

19/7/2017

Last year a friend contacted me to tell me about an idea for a book featuring images of Cambridgeshire by local artists. She wondered if I would be interested in being part of the panel judging the entries and, following our chat, I received a lovely email from artist Emma Bennett whose idea it was.

Emma’s email was very detailed about what it would entail and how grateful she would be if I could give up my time. I didn’t even need to read past the first line really. I hit that reply button immediately feeling extremely flattered and excited.

Cambridge Art Book

In January we met at Emma’s studio to choose over 100 pieces of art from a huge amount of submissions. It was a fascinating and joyous process, and what has been achieved is a unique collection of contemporary images illustrating all aspects of the city and surrounding area. The book contains iconic images of the colleges, punts and bicycles as well as quirky views of telephone boxes and shop fronts.

Last night the book was launched at Heffer’s Bookshop, another Cambridge institution, and it was lovely to see the finished product beautifully curated by Emma. A few pleasant hours were spent chatting to some of my artist friends who feature in the book, and meeting some of the other contributors.
